Admission Requirements for Canadian Applicants


Applicants holding four-year honours baccalaureate degrees from recognized Canadian universities are admissible to the Master of Arts degree in Education (MA) program provided they meet the general admission requirements of both the MA degree program and the College of Graduate Studies.


Applicants holding three-year baccalaureate degrees from Canadian institutions and who also have completed Grade 13 are admissible provided they meet the general admission requirements of both the MA degree program and the College of Graduate Studies.


Applicants holding three-year baccalaureate degrees from Canadian institutions who have not completed Grade 13 may be admissible to the Master of Arts degree in Education by satisfying one of the following:

  1. In addition to the three-year baccalaureate degree, show evidence of having completed a minimum of 24 semester hours (8 half courses or 4 whole courses) of upper-level course work with a grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher (on a 4.0 scale) from a college or university of recognized standing;
  2. In addition to the three-year baccalaureate, show evidence of having earned a B.Ed. degree.
  3. In addition to the three-year baccalaureate degree, show evidence of having completed a post-diploma program that required a bachelor’s degree for admission.
  4. Show evidence of having earned a B.Sc.N. degree (nursing school transcripts must be submitted).

Applicants must meet minimum overall cumulative undergraduate grade point average requirements. (4.0 = A, 3.0 = B, 2.0 = C)

2.7– 4.0 – Regular Admission


Below a 2.7 g.p.a. (B-), Conditional Admission may be awarded by the graduate office. Please contact the program coordinator for more information on this.

The grade point average will be calculated by averaging all marks used toward the bachelor’s degree. If an applicant has a B.Ed., a CAE, or a B.Sc.N., the total grades toward the 4-year degree will be averaged. It should be understood that grading systems differ from one institution to another. Students applying for admission to Central Michigan University need to submit the following materials before their applications can be sent to the Graduate Dean.

  1. A completed and signed application.
  2. $50 application fee in U.S. dollars (payable by money order or credit card).
  3. Official transcripts, with degrees posted, from all universities and colleges.
    These transcripts need to be sent directly from the institution to CMU. Student copies or official transcripts sent by students cannot be accepted. Faxed copies sent directly from the institution may be used temporarily.
  4. A resume.
  5. Letters of recommendation are optional and may be helpful if the grade point average is low.
  6. If the grade point average is below a 2.7 average, a “Letter of Intent” will be requested. This letter is regarded as a writing sample and applicants should take care before submitting it.
