General Precautions
Students Who Miss Classes
Because influenza spreads easily from person to person, students are being
encouraged not to attend classes if they display symptoms. We are
advising students that they should not return to classes for 24 hours after
they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever. Students also are
being encouraged to contact their instructors by e-mail to notify of the
reason for their absence and to make arrangements to complete missed
assignments. As many students will not seek medical treatment, they will
not be able to provide documentation of their illness. Instructors are
encouraged to be sensitive to the situation and to provide opportunities for
students to make up missed work.
Class Cancellations
If you feel the need to cancel your class or classes either because of your
illness or because a substantial number of students would not be attending
class, please give notice by contacting the CMU center Program
Administrator. This individual would announce the schedule change to
students.
Alternate Plan For Delivery Of Instruction
Given the uncertainty that still exists regarding the impact of influenza at
CMU, the Provost is asking you to develop contingency plans to provide
instruction in ways other than the normal face-to-face format. These may
include extensive use of Blackboard, Wimba, podcasting and other tools in
our technology arsenal. CMU’s Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching (FaCIT)
has developed a resources site for faculty who wish to explore and extend
their knowledge and use of these tools -
http://cmich.edu/continuity.htm
. In addition, the Center for Instructional Design can be contacted for
advice at http://www.cel.cmich.edu/CID/about.html .
For specifics on H1N1 cases in your state go to Flu.gov and check out “Where You Live” for an interactive map reflecting your state’s H1N1 status and exposure.
